Show Only One Category on WordPress Calendar

On a recent build, the client insisted on having a calendar in the sidebar to show their previous blog posts. The default WordPress calendar widget worked great for this. The problem I ran into was when the client wanted the calendar to only show posts from their “Events” category.

Some Google searching turned up MySQL queries that could be modified, but I was hoping for an easier solution. Next up, I turned my attention to the WordPress plugin repository where I found Calendar Category by Gary Jones.

Usually I don’t like using WordPress plugins with the dreaded caution message “This plugin hasn’t been updated in over 2 years.” This likely means that you’re going to run into issues when old versions mix with new versions. After reading the plugin description, I decided to give it a shot anyways since it sounded like a perfect match.

Un-registers the default Calendar widget, and registers a new one which supports showing only those posts in certain (or all) categories.

It turns out the plugin worked great, even with WordPress 3.8.1. The plugin solved my issue so well that I registered for a WordPress.org account to rate it highly.
