Backend Development

Backend development is used to manage data and the physical systems which produce a website. It’s often called server-side development since the coding languages are finished running before reaching an internet browser.

Unlike frontend development which is used for design and functionality, the backend languages are concerned with storing and managing data while also maintaining the website servers themselves. To learn about HTML, CSS and JS, take a look at frontend development and what the other half of code is used for.

The primary languages used in backend development are PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP for short) and My Structured Query Language (MySQL). PHP is used to process data and manage variables while MySQL is used to create databases and retrieve information. Combined with the Linux operating system and the Apache HTTP Server, MySQL and PHP make up the acronym LAMP. These four components are largely responsible for backend development used to build dynamic websites.
